End of the year… and a touch of fantasy

It’s the end of the year, and lately I’ve been spending a lot of time browsing other people’s crochet creations—mostly on Etsy and DeviantArt.

Dangerous activity, honestly.

There are so many incredibly talented makers out there, creating stylish, fantasy-inspired, and gothic pieces. I hadn’t even realized how often crochet is used in cosplay until now. And of course, that immediately made me want to try something a little different myself.

The idea: something a bit more magical

Up to this point, I’ve mostly been focusing on basic stitches and simple shapes. But this time, I wanted to step slightly outside of that comfort zone.

So I came up with the idea of a decorative forearm piece.

It’s not exactly a glove—there are no fingers. Instead, it has a small ring that sits on the middle finger, holding the whole piece in place while the rest wraps along the hand and forearm.

The making

I used two shades of purple wool (because subtlety is overrated), even though I know that a thinner, more delicate yarn would probably suit this kind of project better. But for now, I work with what I have—and that’s part of the fun.

The main structure is a long sleeve-like section, finished with a large flower placed on the top of the palm as the central decoration.

For the ring detail, I added purple glass beads, and in the center of the flower I used a large, hand-painted wooden bead to tie everything together.

The result

I have to admit, I’m really happy with how it turned out.

It looks much more intricate than it actually is, and the whole piece was surprisingly simple to make. But most importantly, it has that soft, slightly magical feel—something between elf and fairy.

And just like that, I ended up creating my first accessory that actually fits into a fantasy or cosplay setting.

Not bad for a “what if” idea at the end of the year ✨

Introduction

Hello there, fellow makers (and curious wanderers) 🧶

I’m in my 30s, which apparently is the perfect age to either have everything figured out… or to completely reinvent your life. I chose the second option.

A couple of years ago, I walked away from a full-time job and started building my own small business. These days I work part-time as a copywriter, mostly from home, which feels like winning a quiet little lottery—especially since I live in the countryside, where the loudest office distraction is usually a bird with strong opinions.

Now, here’s where things get interesting.

A few months ago, my mum fell head over heels into crocheting. Not the casual “I’ll try it once” kind of interest. No. Full obsession. And the annoying part? She got really good at it, really fast.

Meanwhile, I had a long history with crochet… if you count multiple failed attempts, confusion over patterns, and a deep mistrust of charts that look like secret codes. I wanted to learn, I really did—but it never quite clicked.

Until it did.

Somewhere between mild jealousy (okay, strong jealousy) and having way too many ideas for things I wanted to make, I discovered YouTube tutorials. Turns out, seeing someone actually do the stitches makes a world of difference. Who knew?

It still took me a while to get the basics down, and I started small—very small—using leftover yarn scraps that my mum generously (and somewhat skeptically) shared with me. She didn’t have much faith in my consistency, and honestly… fair. I do have a reputation for intense but short-lived enthusiasm.

But here we are.

It’s been about five months, and I’m still crocheting. Still learning. Still slightly surprised by it.

I’ve also developed a minor habit of collecting yarn—mostly from second-hand shops. Back in Poland, you can still find incredible quality yarn for just a few coins, which feels like uncovering tiny treasure chests every time.

This blog is my little corner to document that journey—crochet, crafts, experiments, small wins, and probably a few creative disasters along the way. If you’re here for any of that, you’re very welcome to stay.

My first project: a scrappy little rug 💗

Today I want to share one of my very first finished pieces—a small round rug made entirely from leftover yarn.

I didn’t want it to look completely random, so I stuck to shades of pink and purple. The result is a slightly chaotic mix of shiny, fluffy, and regular yarns… which somehow works together better than expected.

It was fun, imperfect, and exactly the kind of project that made me realize: okay, I might actually stick with this.

You can see the yarns I used and the finished rug in the photos below.
